Sometimes the biggest relationship arguments don’t start with cheating, money, or some dramatic betrayal, they start with something as ordinary as a set of shelves. In this case, a simple favor for a girlfriend’s best friend somehow turned into an entire weekend being planned without the one person who was actually expected to do the work. I had already spent months enjoying a hobby that led me to build custom shelves for my movie collection, and apparently my girlfriend Elizabeth’s admiration for them made her believe I was now available as a free handyman for anyone in her social circle.
The timing couldn’t have been worse. I had been looking forward to seeing my best friend again after three years apart, and we had carefully planned a movie and camping trip that we both knew might be our only opportunity to spend meaningful time together. Then, at the last possible moment, I was informed that those plans apparently no longer mattered.

Now She’s Been Cold And Catty Ever Since, So Was I Actually Setting A Reasonable Boundary, Or Did I Take My Refusal Too Far?

Let’s dive into what the Reddit jury has to say.

Looking back, I don’t think the real argument was ever about shelves, books, or even Sarah. The issue was that Elizabeth made a commitment on my behalf without asking me, then expected me to rearrange plans I’d made weeks in advance simply because she and Sarah had already bought materials and organized everything. Had she asked me beforehand, I might have happily agreed to help, or we could have found another weekend that worked for everyone.
Instead, I was essentially presented with a completed plan and told that my role was to show up and perform several hours of manual labor. I refused, kept the plans I’d already made, and had an amazing weekend with a friend I hadn’t seen in three years. Elizabeth now believes I embarrassed her, while I feel like I simply established a basic boundary: you can ask me for a favor, but you cannot volunteer my time without my permission. So now I’m left wondering whether I was being unreasonable, or whether saying no was exactly what I needed to do.
