I never imagined that I would ever have to question whether my own sister was safe to eat around, let alone whether she would deliberately put something life-threatening into my food. We had always been relatively close, and despite the usual ups and downs between siblings, I had never had a reason to believe she wanted to hurt me.

My shellfish allergy, however, has never been a secret. She has known about it since we were children and had actually witnessed me suffer a serious reaction that required hospital treatment. Because of that history, I trusted her more than I probably would have trusted almost anyone else. When she invited me and her husband over for what seemed like an ordinary lunch, I had absolutely no reason to suspect anything. She told me the food was tuna pasta, something I could safely eat, and I accepted it without hesitation. Within moments of taking a bite, however, that trust was replaced by terror.

What happened afterward has completely changed the way I see my sister and, honestly, my entire family. This was not simply a case of someone accidentally using the wrong ingredient or forgetting about an allergy. She knew exactly what I was allergic to, knew how serious my reactions could be, had personally witnessed me being hospitalized as a child, and still decided to secretly put shellfish into my food because she wanted to “test” whether I was telling the truth. The fact that she later accused me of faking the reaction only made everything more disturbing.

I understand why my mother wishes I had simply cut contact and walked away from the situation, but I don’t know how I could quietly ignore something that could have ended with me de*d. I never wanted to involve the police or turn a family problem into something this serious, but my sister made that decision when she deliberately endangered me. At this point, protecting myself has to matter more than protecting her from the consequences of what she chose to do.
