AITA for taking my son home when my sister gave him something he was allergic to?

As a parent, there are certain things you hope you never have to worry about when leaving your child in the care of someone you love. For me, food allergies are one of those things. My six-year-old son has a food allergy, and while his reactions are considered moderate, I never take chances with his safety. I carefully check what he eats, ask questions before he goes anywhere, and even carry an EpiPen just in case a situation ever becomes more serious than expected.

That is why I thought leaving him with my sister for her son’s birthday party would be completely fine. She is his aunt; she knows about his allergy, and I specifically asked her whether the food would be safe. She reassured me that everything was taken care of. I had no reason to think she was lying. Unfortunately, when I returned to pick up my son, I discovered that her idea of “taking care of him” was something I never could have imagined.

Wondering what Reddit thinks? Let’s take a look.

I never wanted this situation to become a legal or family-wide battle. My sister is the mother of three children, and knowing that she is already in the middle of a custody dispute decided to report what happened. Part of me wanted to believe that maybe this was a horrible mistake, a moment of ignorance, or something that could be resolved within the family.

But the more I thought about it, the more I realized that she knew about my son’s allergy; I specifically asked her about the food, and she deliberately gave him something she knew could make him sick. What hurt even more was her complete lack of remorse afterwards. Instead of worrying about my son, she was angry that I had “ruined” her son’s birthday. I may feel sorry for the consequences she could face, but my son’s safety has to come first. I can love my sister and still refuse to let her put my child in danger again.

What do you think?
