Some childhood wounds are strange that way: everyone else forgets them, life moves forward, and yet the person who suffered them can still remember every tiny detail. For me, it was a Batman action figure. To anyone else, it was just a toy. To a lonely third-grader who had spent months saving allowance and mowing lawns to afford it, it represented something much bigger: a possession I had earned, something I was proud of, and perhaps most importantly, something that briefly made another child want to be my friend.
Derek knew exactly how badly I wanted acceptance, and he used that vulnerability against me. He stole the toy, denied ever receiving it, threatened me when I protested, and then destroyed what little social standing I had by spreading humiliating lies about me. I eventually moved on, grew up, built a career, and became someone Derek would never have expected that awkward little boy to become. Nearly twenty years later, fate put him directly in my path again, this time when he desperately needed my professional help.

What does Reddit have to say about all this? Let’s find out.

Looking back, I know that what happened when we were children cannot truly be undone. I can’t give that frightened third-grader his Batman figure back, erase the humiliation, or rewrite the years when he felt powerless and alone. But perhaps that’s exactly why seeing Derek’s expression that day felt so strangely satisfying. For years, he had insisted that I imagined what happened. He had convinced himself that the past didn’t matter and that whatever damage he caused was simply something I should have forgotten. Yet when the same words came back to him decades later, “You must have imagined it”, he finally understood.
The irony was almost perfect. I hadn’t needed to chase him, threaten him, or invent some elaborate scheme. His own choices, his own shortcuts, and his own disregard for rules had created the disaster. I simply refused to rescue him from consequences he had brought upon himself. That little Batman figure may have cost me two months of childhood effort, but apparently karma had been collecting interest ever since.
