AITA for Canceling My Kid’s Party Over a ‘Joke’ That Wasn’t Funny?

Raising teenagers is hard enough without having to navigate blatant disrespect toward the people they should love most. I never imagined that my daughter—someone who has been doted on, celebrated, and loved by my husband since she was a little girl—would publicly humiliate him and use a hateful slur. What started as a silly TikTok “joke” spiraled into a painful confrontation, hurt feelings, and the complete cancellation of what was supposed to be her milestone Sweet Sixteen.

Let’s find out what other Redditors think about this story.

I’m still torn between wanting to teach my daughter a lesson about respect and compassion, and wanting to keep the peace in our family. On one hand, I refuse to tolerate homophobia, cruelty, or public humiliation toward someone who has been nothing but kind to her. On the other hand, I know she’s a teenager and may not fully grasp the weight of her words. Right now, the birthday party is still off, and the trust between us feels shaken. Maybe time will heal it—but I can’t help but wonder if standing firm makes me the bad guy in her eyes, or if it’s the only way she’ll truly understand the consequences of her actions.
