The truth is, if you frequently have really vivid or lucid dreams, you can never be absolutely certain if you are dreaming or not. Use of reality checks is crucial for this reason. I think there are some reality checks you can use to distinguish between reality and dreams.
First, try to breathe by closing your mouth and nose while looking at your hands. Another wonderful idea is to put your hand through something firm (if it goes through, it means you are dreaming). You might also try turning on a light switch or reading some literature (which will appear strange in a dream). Usually, strange behaviour such as a sound will occur.
